Pre Arrival Information
Welcome!
Congratulations on your acceptance to the American Language Institute (ALI) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB)!
Now that you're accepted, here are some steps to complete before your arrival.
Before Traveling
The ALI Welcome Packet will be emailed to you. It includes your acceptance letter, SEVIS Form I-20 (if applicable), visa interview instructions, and other important information.
Applicants issued a SEVIS Form I-20 should carefully review all pages of the form. If there are any errors on the SEVIS Form I-20, contact the DSO immediately for updates.
*If you are a transfer student or you do not require a student visa to study at the ALI, the process may vary. Contact our office for more information.
To help prepare for your classes and determine your level, we require your registration in the ALI online placement test. This mandatory test takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete. The test is FREE and it will allow us to tell you the level of ALI classes you will need. You may complete the test from your home country. The exam will test your level of academic English in listening, reading, writing, and grammar. We do not share the specific content of the exam because it is a language exam that tests your current level of proficiency. There is nothing specific you need to study to prepare for the test. Continue practicing English and make sure you are well-rested and have eaten when you log in to take the test, so you are physically and mentally prepared to focus and complete all the sections. Continue checking your personal email address for more information on how to confirm your enrollment for the test.

English Proficiency Requirement
English Proficiency Requirement
If English is not your native language, or you have not had three years of your secondary education taught in English, you will be required to provide proof of your English proficiency. Since most classes are taught in English, you must demonstrate your ability to read, write and speak English.
CSU campuses will use the TOEFL test to measure your English proficiency. The TOEFL test is given year-round at permanent testing centers around the world. There are three versions of the test – paper, internet (TOEFL iBT), and computer-based. Some campuses have higher score requirements, and some may require additional examinations.
At the baccalaureate level, a minimum score of 500 on the paper-based exam or a score of 61 on the internet (TOEFL iBT) version is required on most campuses.
At the graduate and postbaccalaureate level a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based exam or a score of 80 on the internet (TOEFL iBT) version is required on most campuses.
If you need to take the TOEFL, we recommend that you take the examination as soon as possible. There are registration deadlines for the TOEFL, and it does take approximately two - five weeks to obtain your results. Each campus will have its own minimum score on either the paper TOEFL or on the computer-based TOEFL. You should have Educational Testing Service (ETS) send your official scores directly to each campus where you are applying for admission. For information about TOEFL, go to www.toefl.org.
