The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a year-round, 7-level program which emphasizes preparation for academic work at the college/university level. This program is offered three times a year: Fall (August), Spring (January), and Summer (May). Students may begin in any of the three sessions and continue year-round (Summer is optional). All levels of English learners are welcome.

Preparing to attend a U.S. college or university
Studying for the TOEFL, GMAT, GRE or other entrance examinations
Advancing English skills for their major or career
Seeking fun or leisure with their English academic preparation
Access to Conversation Lab and conversation partners

Multiple social activities, for example:
Kayaking
Ice Cream Social

This is a 7-level program. Students’ placement will be determined at orientation. Once you pass all classes in your level (each level takes one 13-16 week session), you may continue to the next level.
Students who complete Level 4 (undergraduate) may use the American Language Institute's English Proficiency Waiver to enter a CSULB undergraduate degree program, or one of CSULB’s community college partners programs without taking TOEFL or IELTS exam. Partners are Long Beach City College, Mt. SAC, Orange Coast College, Cypress College, Golden West College, or El Camino College.
Students who complete Level 6 (graduate) may use the American Language Institute's English Proficiency Waiver to enter a CSULB graduate program.
Students who are in Level 5 or 6 of the Intensive English program are eligible to take CSULB university courses through Open University while in the Intensive English program. Level 5 students can enroll in 1 Open University course and Level 6 students can enroll in up to 2 Open University courses. These courses are included on students’official transcriptsand may be transferrable to other universities. ALI academic advisors assist students with course selection and registration.
What appealed to me about CSULB is the environment. I love sunny weather, the beaches, and the diversity of people. CSULB has all of them. It is just perfect for me!

Curriculum
The IEP consists of the three courses listed below with an opportunity to choose an additional enrichment course. The curriculum is specifically tailored to prepare you for rigorous academic studies. Each course at every level has a set of specific objectives which must be met in order to continue to the next level.
In this 9-hour per week class, you will:
Learn how to write academic essays and research papers
Improve academic reading skills and comprehension
Build academic vocabulary
In this 4 hour per week Grammar class, you will:
Improve knowledge and use of variety of grammar forms
Improve your accuracy in both writing and speaking
In this 8-hour per week class, you will:
Give academic presentations on a variety of topics
Improve listening comprehension of academic lectures
Learn effective note-taking strategies
Improve communication skills
You may choose a 2-hour per week enrichment class such as:

Our optional Conversation Lab gives students the opportunity to meet with, interact with, and make friends with fluent speakers of English. Conversation Partners are local CSULB university students dedicated to helping our students improve their conversation skills.

Our optional Homework Lab gives students the opportunity to meet with a tutor one-on-one. Students can ask questions about and receive guidance on any of their classes or assignments.
Students develop academic writing and reading skills.Depending on the level, the students will learnand improveparagraph andessay writing,including making effective arguments and incorporating sourcematerial;reading comprehensionofgeneral and academic texts;andacademicvocabulary.
ALI - Grammar

Students will focus on a specific topic or area of language, such as Business English, English for Math, TOEFL or IELTS Prep, Pronunciation, or Vocabulary.
