The American Language Institute (ALI) at California State University, Long Beach has been providing quality international programs for more than 30 years.
Our longevity and success come from the dedication and expertise of our professional, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic faculty and staff. At the ALI, we are proud to have one of the first CEA-accredited Intensive English Programs in California and to be part of all that CSULB and Long Beach have to offer. Over the last 5 years, we have hosted students from over 55 countries.
Our students come to improve their English skills for academic and professional purposes or for personal enrichment. We have a program for every need!

The ALI offers in-person office hours daily between 12-1pm (no appointment necessary). We are located in the Foundation Building, suite 104.

Jacqueline Record
Jacqueline.Record@csulb.eduJacqueline Record has a BA in English Literature and Spanish from Knox College and an MA in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has taught ESL in academic, workplace, and community education programs; and has published in the areas of second language writing and grammar instruction. Her professional areas of interest include program administration, faculty development, and second language writing. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, exploring Southern California, and reading.
Denay Ponce
Denay Ponce earned a BA in Criminal Justice from California State University, Fullerton, where she also worked as a Student Life Coordinator and provided services to international students for over ten years. She has a passion for coordination and event planning, as well as interacting with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. In her free time, Denay enjoys spending time with her family and friends, listening to music, reading, and traveling.
Janeth Mendoza
Janeth Mendoza has earned a BA in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Fullerton and a MA in TESOL from the University of Southern California. She has worked with international students at the IEP level, provided speech-language therapy to school-aged children and has taught English as a second language. In her spare time, Janeth enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and friends.
Jennifer Nolasco
Jennifer Nolasco earned a BA in Linguistics from UCI, a MA in Linguistics from CSULB, and a TESOL Certificate from CSULB. She has been teaching since 2008 and has been with the ALI since 2011. At the ALI, Jennifer has taught various levels of Reading/Writing/Vocabulary, Grammar, Listening/Speaking, and Spelling. She has also re-developed and taught the curriculum of the English through Film elective class. She is currently the Prep Coordinator. Her other professional activities include mentoring CSULB linguistic students and being an active member of CATESOL. When not teaching, Jennifer enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies, and traveling.
Mission
The mission of the American Language Institute (ALI) is to provide quality education that upholds the high academic standards and integrity of its affiliate campus, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). The ALI team strives to maximize learning and successfully prepare students to thrive in their academic and professional endeavors.
As an integral part of the College of Professional and Continuing Education, the ALI responds to the needs of the local, national and international community. The ALI offers a variety of English Language programs. Our academic offerings include the Intensive English Program, Intensive Preparatory Program, MBA Preparation Program and university credit courses and customized short-term offerings. We also offer a professional teaching certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Times Media
The American Language Institute works in conjunction with Times Media in offering the TESOL and TESOL for Children Certificate Programs throughout Korea. These certificate programs are designed for individuals who are interested in teaching English as a Foreign Language. The well-balanced programs enable participants to gain an understanding of the theoretical background in TESOL and its practical application. The ALI faculty provides supervision for curriculum development and enhancement, supports professional development for their trainers and endorses the certificate programs.
The American Language Institute is affiliated with University of Redlands Master of Business Administration program. ALI students may waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement of this college by successfully completing Level 6 of the IEP or by completing the MBA Preparation Program. ALI prospective students may also apply for Conditional Admission to this program.
The American Language Institute is affiliated with Virscend University’s Bachelor of Science, Business Administration and its Master of Business Administration programs. ALI students may waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement of this college by successfully completing Level 4 of the IEP for admission to the BS program, and by completing the MBA Preparation Program or Level 6 of the IEP program for admission to the MBA program. ALI prospective students may also apply for Conditional Admission to this program.
Memberships
Many staff and faculty members belong to CATESOL. The ALI is regularly represented at conferences by presenters and attendees.
The ALI's IEP is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period August 2018 through August 2027 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. The ALI belongs to EnglishUSA. Over four hundred fifty EnglishUSA members offer intensive English language programs in privately owned enterprises or on college campuses across the USA. EnglishUSA provides its members resources for professional development, political advocacy, and outreach.
Several ALI staff members belong to NAFSA: the Association of International Educators. Like other professional organizations, NAFSA holds international, regional, and local conventions and provides many valuable resources.
