Mohamed Abdelhamid, PhD, was recently honored with the 2023-24 Edward M. McAleer Jr. Excellence and Innovation Award for his work as a teacher and director of the Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) degree program, which is offered in partnership with the College of Business (COB) and College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPaCE).
“I enjoy every aspect of teaching and managing the MSIS program,” he said. “Receiving this award is a tremendous motivation for me to continue putting in the extra effort to make a difference and inspire my students.”
Dr. Abdelhamid has been Director of the MSIS program since Fall 2021 and has taught in the program for about four years. He has integrated state-of-the-art technologies and concepts into the program’s curriculum such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI). He publishes research on topics like cybercrime, blockchain, online gaming addiction, and healthcare technology; and his work has been noted in outlets including Reuters, Huffington Post, Discover Magazine, and Long Beach Post News, among others.
Two emerging talents from the MSIS program, students Emma Rosas and Victoria Tran, recently won the Best Visualization Award at the annual SoCal RUG Data Hackathon at UC Irvine.
“The quality of their work and presentations was truly impressive,” said Dr. Abdelhamid. “The judges' inspiring comments and feedback made it a proud moment for me as an instructor.”
In Fall 2024, the MSIS program will begin offering a course in Responsible AI, which covers ethical, social, and technical, and legal considerations as well as criteria for fairness, transparency, privacy, and accountability. The course was already developed and approved when President Biden signed an Executive Order in 2023 for the safe and secure development of AI.
“Our department is pioneering in the area of AI and we are thinking ahead,” said Dr. Abdelhamid. “The program was proactive about this important issue.”
