Sport Management Grad Gets Activated with L.A. Lakers

When Patrick Barkley enrolled in CSULB’s Master of Arts in Kinesiology—Option in Sport Management degree program in 2014, he knew that he was in an ideal location to pursue his dream career.

“There are a lot of sport management programs across the world,” Barkley explained, “but what appealed to me the most [about CSULB] was the emphasis on real-world industry experience and networking opportunities; along with the ideal location in Southern California and its wide variety of sport management opportunities.”

The program’s expert instructors—such as Dedan Brozino, the Executive Director of Development at the Rose Bowl; and Charles Harris, whose career has included executive positions with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Anaheim Ducks—bring real-world experience into the classroom. Barkley credits them with giving him a head start into the sports industry before he even graduated.

“All of them are extraordinary individuals, care deeply about the success of the students, and do a great job,” he said.

The flexible class schedule also made it possible for Barkley to score multiple internships, so he could expand his professional network while balancing work and school at the same time.

“My experience in the program definitely helped prepare me for the rigors of working in the sports industry,” said Barkley. “The program helped me develop and refine my networking, strategic thinking, and communication skills—all are pertinent to success in the sports industry.”

It wasn’t long after graduating in 2016 that Barkley scored an incredible opportunity with current NBA champions the Los Angeles Lakers. For the past five seasons, he has held the title of Manager of Partner Activation.

“I directly engage with Lakers fans in the arena, in the community, and across social/digital platforms,” said Barkley of his role.

Barkley leads the charge on creating marketing strategies with top brands including Toyota, Lexus, Anheuser-Busch, American Express, Delta, and Gatorade. He also works with the team’s sales division on new business development and inventory opportunities for the organization’s partners. It’s an enviable position for anyone interested in the business of sports and athletics.

“The Sport Management program changed my life by giving me my first opportunities within the industry to gain experience,” he said, “and ultimately, my first full-time job in sports.”
