Every semester graduate students must be registered in a course, or in Graduate Studies 700 (GS 700), or must have an approved educational leave. During Winter and Summer sessions, enrollment in a course or GS 700 is required only if the student plans to graduate during that particular term. Registration in GS 700 is restricted to graduate students who have completed all the coursework but need additional time to complete their thesis, project, or comprehensive exam. If a student wishes to take a semester off before resuming coursework, she or he must take a Planned Educational Leave, not GS 700. The purpose of this restriction is to keep students on track to completion within the required seven-year period.
Although GS 700 is a zero-unit course, the fee is based on one unit of credit for payment purposes; no unit credit is added to the student's program or transcript. The one-unit fee is payable online or at the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPaCE) within the first 2 weeks of the semester.
Graduate student enrollment in GS 700 must be approved by department graduate advisors, chairs, or when they are not available, the Associate Dean or the Graduate Director for the college. Registration in GS 700 is CR/NC only. After registering for four semesters of GS 700, students will be subject to a registration hold. Prior to registering for any subsequent semester of GS 700, the department graduate advisor must confer with the student and with the Associate Dean of the college about an appropriate course of action for the graduate student. Colleges/departments may hold students to a stricter timeline than outlined here.
Students who wish to enroll in additional semesters of GS 700 will be required to obtain the approval of their department and the associate dean of their college.
There are three separate methods to register for this course, as described in the menus below, each one depending on the time frame of registration. Enrollment during Winter or Summer is only required if the student wishes to graduate during that session.
In order for successful enrollment in GS 700, your graduation date must not have passed already. You are responsible for maintaining your graduation progress through the Enrollment Services office (Brotman Hall 123) by filing a Request to Change Graduation Date form. For more information regarding filing for graduation or graduation date changes, contact Enrollment Services at (562) 985-5471.
