Global engagement is a pillar of CSULB’s strategic plan, and faculty members play a key role in connecting the university with partners around the world. The Office of International Education and Global Engagement facilitates faculty involvement in international initiatives through grants, administrative support for visiting scholars, and strategies that help to shape campus internationalization efforts.
Lead A Group Abroad
Faculty-led study abroad programs are the most popular way for CSULB students to gain valuable international experience. The Education Abroad office provides guidance and resources to assist faculty members in the development and administration of these high-impact programs. In addition to short-term programs, CSULB faculty can also lead semester-long experiences such as the London, Costa Rica, or Florence semester programs.
Short-Term Programs
Contact Sharon Olson, Director, Education Abroad for instructions and guidelines for creating and implementing a Faculty-Led, Short-Term Program.
Long-Term Programs
The Center for International Education is currently accepting applications from CSULB faculty who have an interest in teaching in the CSULB Florence Semester Program in Fall 2023. The Florence Semester Program was initiated in Fall 2016 and has been very successful since its inception. Faculty teach two CSULB upper-division GE courses and also act as faculty of record for a beginning Italian language and culture course (taught by an adjunct faculty member in Florence) and supervise any students who choose to enroll in an internship in Florence (for a total of 12 WTU).
Faculty members teaching in this program are expected to relate their instruction to the Italian setting to the greatest degree possible.

Funding Opportunities
There are multiple funding opportunities for CSULB faculty and scholars to pursue different projects. Please click on the icons below to explore Fulbright programs and Professors Around the World (PAW) research grants.
Fulbright
Each year the Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program provides approximately 800 grants in more than 125 countries to support teaching and research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Scholars contribute not only to their host institutions but also their home universities and colleges. Recently, Fulbright has introduced new options to better accommodate the interests and commitments of today’s scholars, including innovations that increase flexibility, impact and scope of the program.
The Core Program also includes Distinguished Chair awards, a group of highly selective awards intended for eminent scholars with records of significant publications and outstanding teaching.
Fulbright IEA seminars are open to experienced international education administrators and other senior administrators responsible for enhancing the international dimensions of their institutions. These 2 week seminars engage U.S. administrators with overseas peers in a comparative study of the society, culture and higher education systems of France, Germany, India, Japan or South Korea.
The Fulbright Specialist Program promotes linkages between U.S. scholars and professionals and their counterparts at host institutions overseas. The program awards grants for short-term (2-6 weeks) collaborative projects in over 140 countries and 24 academic disciplines. Shorter grant lengths give Fulbright Specialists greater flexibility to pursue projects that work best with their current academic or professional commitments.
The Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program brings together a group of junior scholars, professionals and mid-career applied researchers from the United States, Brazil and other Western Hemisphere nations for a series of three seminar meetings and a Fulbright exchange experience. Fulbright NEXUS fosters collaborative and multidisciplinary research to address challenging regional issues and produce tangible results.
Approximately 850 faculty and professionals from more than 100 countries receive Fulbright grants each year. They conduct research, teach and pursue combined teaching and research in the United States. Scholars apply in their home countries for these grants. The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program links campuses around the world and introduces new ideas and contacts to students, faculty and administrators.
Through the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program, U.S. colleges and universities collaborate with scholars from other countries to assist in internationalizing U.S. campuses, curriculum and communities. Fulbright S-I-Rs teach primarily on the undergraduate level in their areas of expertise and provide a cross-cultural or international perspective to promote curriculum and program development.
The Outreach Lecturing Fund (OLF) provides funding for campuses to host Fulbright Visiting Scholars, who are already in the United States, for short-term speaking engagements. Special consideration is given to campuses that have not previously participated in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Institutions underrepresented in the Fulbright Program are especially encouraged to participate, as are Minority Serving Institutions and community colleges.
Professors Around the World (PAW)
The Center for International Education and the International Education Committee of the Academic Senate is pleased to announce the Professors Around the World (PAW) request for proposals for academic year 2023-2024.
The PAW program is offered by the Office of the Provost in conjunction with the Office of International Education and Global Engagement. The goal of PAW is to strengthen CSULB's global mission and comprehensive campus internationalization initiatives by engaging and supporting faculty travel related to international collaborative research projects, developing or enhancing study or work abroad opportunities for students, and building or strengthening relationships with overseas partner institutions.
Proposals for the next academic year are due by Friday, March 31, 2023.
Please submit your proposal electronically to Servando Burciaga at Servando.Burciaga@csulb.edu.
Award decisions will be made by April 21, 2023.
Project activities including international travel within this grant cycle should commence starting from July 1, 2023 and be completed by June 30, 2024. All tenured, tenure-track, and full-time faculty (Unit 3) are eligible to apply.

H-1B Temporary Workers
CSULB will support H-1B status for a job candidate who has been offered a tenure/tenure-track position as a faculty member.
The H-1B nonimmigrant status permits temporary employment in specialty occupations. An H-1B employee must have professional skills and a university degree (at minimum, a bachelor’s degree) in the same or similar field as the job offered. Under current regulations, H-1B status is granted for an initial period of three years, and a three-year extension is possible for a maximum duration of six years. The H-1B petition is employer-specific.
Dependents of H-1B holders are eligible for H-4 status.
H-1B Petition at CSULB
All requests for H-1B status at CSULB must be initiated by Faculty Affairs by contacting Jessica Slagle at (562) 985-2705 or Jessica.slagle@csulb.edu.
- After offering a position to a prospective international applicant, the Office of Faculty Affairs contacts the Office of International Students and Scholars to start the H-1B petition.
- The international faculty member must submit a completed H-1B Biographical Information Form to the Office of International Students and Scholars.
- The Office of International Students and Scholars will submit the Labor Condition Application (LCA) from the U.S. Department of Labor. Within 30 days of the LCA submission, the U.S. Department of Labor will send a certified LCA to the Office of International Students and Scholars.
- After receiving the certified LCA, the Office of International Students and Scholars prepares and submits the H-1B petition to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
- When USCIS approves the H-1B petition:
- If the employee is not in the U.S., the Office of International Students and Scholars will send the approval notice to the international faculty member to obtain the H-1B visa stamp to enter the U.S.
- H-1B employees extending their CSULB employment may remain working at the university while waiting for USCIS approval, if the extension request was submitted to USCIS before the expiration of their current H-1B. If the extension request was received by USCIS before the current H-1B expired, the H-1B status holder is granted a 240-day grace period to continue living and working in the U.S. while the petition is pending.
- H-1B employees who are changing employers to CSULB are only eligible for CSULB payroll when USCIS receives the H-1B change of employer petition.
- International faculty members changing to H-1B status from a different status (F-1, J-1, TN, etc.) may begin working in H-1B status when the Notice of Approval has been received from USCIS.
- I-129 Form Filing Fee: $460

- H-4 status is contingent upon the validity of the H-1B beneficiary. For those H-4 dependents residing in the U.S. whose status is expiring, they must file Form I-539 concurrently with the main beneficiary. If the H-4 dependent is abroad, they must apply for the H-4 visa stamp using the documents of the main beneficiary.
