Admission Criteria
Please note: Since education systems and schools vary by country, your grades and scores from your particular school may not necessarily reflect the evaluated grades for admissions eligibility at CSULB.
Freshmen
Students who have not completed any coursework at a college or university after high school graduation are considered First Time Freshmen. See below for CSULB admission criteria for Freshmen.
Minimum GPA for all majors including STEM: 3.0, or a "B" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.
All first-year student applicants must submit the following items:

- Submit original and certified English copies of transcripts from all institutions attended:
- You must list all high schools/secondary institutions attended on your application to avoid a delay in processing.
- Transcripts must show grades through the first half of your final year. Please do not send transcripts until those grades are posted to avoid having to submit multiple transcripts.
- Students with “O” levels must provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for least 2 “A/AS” subjects completed.
- Meet CSULB English Language Requirements
- If you have already taken an English Exam, please send your official test score to CSULB. Please also submit an unofficial copy of your test scores with your supporting documents.
- A list of countries for which we waive the English Demonstration can be found through the “English Language Requirements” link.
- First-year student STEM applicants must have at least three years of high school math.
Requirements for SAT/ACT scores:
A note for Fall 2021 and Fall 2022 first-year students: The California State University (CSU) has temporarily suspended the use of ACT/SAT examinations in determining admission eligibility for all CSU campuses for the 2021-2022 academic year. This temporary change of admission eligibility applies only for Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022, and Spring 2023 admission cycles. Undergraduate Transfers
Students who have completed at least 60 transferable semester units or 90 transferable quarter units are considered “undergraduate transfer” students. See below for CSULB admission criteria for undergraduate transfers.

Admission criteria include the following:
Transfer application is only open to Junior/Senior upper division students who have completed at least 60 transferable semester units or 90 transferable quarter units. These units must be completed at a regionally accredited college or university to be considered transferable. The number of transferable units will be determined by the International Admissions office.
Minimum GPA requirement for transfer students varies by semester and program. Please check Major Specific Requirements to learn more.

Admission Criteria for transfer students differ depending on your current status:
International students (requiring an F-1 visa) who have completed only coursework from the United States, or have a combination of foreign and U.S. coursework:
- File a CSU Long Beach application through Cal State Apply
- Spring application period: August 1 – August 31 (Priority Deadline)
- Fall application period: October 1 – November 30 (Priority Deadline)
- Complete a Supplemental Application
- The supplemental application will only be accessible through an email invitation after submitting the Cal State Apply application. Filing period may vary from year to year.
- Spring Supplemental Application period: September 2 – September 21
- Fall Supplemental Application period: January 4 – February 1
- Submit all original and certified English copies of transcripts from all colleges/universities attended:
- For Fall Admission, transcripts must show units through the end of Spring Term.
- For Spring Admission, transcripts must show units through the end of the previous Summer Term.
- Please do not request transcripts until the above terms have been met.
- Applicants submitting electronic transcripts from U.S. institutions (National Clearinghouse, Parchment, etc.) must submit transcripts to ES-IDPTrans@csulb.edu.
- Meet CSULB English Language Requirements
- Applicants transferring from a domestic U.S. institution with over 60 transferable semester units or 90 transferable quarter units may qualify for an English waiver.
- CSULB waives the English Language requirement for students from certain countries. Please see English Language Requirements page for more information.
- Complete the four foundation courses (known as the “Golden Four”) with a grade of “C” or better:
- Oral Communication
- Written Communication
- Critical Thinking
- College Level Mathematics
- Complete Major Specific Requirements with a “C” or better grade.
- Check your major's required courses.
- Due to the large number of applications, it is highly recommended that you complete both the required and recommended major-specific courses listed in the link above.
* Students attending a California College or University are encouraged to use ASSIST to determine transferable coursework.
International transfers who require an F-1 visa and have only foreign coursework from outside the United States:
- File a CSU Long Beach application through Cal State Apply.
- Please note the Application and Document Deadlines.
- Submit original and certified English copies of transcripts from all institutions attended (high schools and colleges/universities):
- For Fall Admission, transcripts must show units through the end of previous Spring Term.
- For Spring Admission, transcripts must show units through the end of the previous Summer Term.
- Please do not request transcripts until the above terms have been met to avoid having to submit multiple transcripts.
- Meet CSULB English Language Requirements
- Please send your official score to CSULB. Please also submit an unofficial copy of your test scores with your supporting documents.
- Complete College Level Mathematics.
Graduate Students
Students who have obtained a degree comparable to a U.S. bachelor’s degree are considered graduate students. See below for CSULB admission criteria for a graduate degree.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Completed a four-year college course of study and hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or shall have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by appropriate campus authorities
- Be in good academic standing at the last college or university attended
- Minimum GPA: 2.5 (recommended 3.0) for the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted (typically your last 2 years of university coursework)
Department Requirements:
Please visit the Graduate Studies page to review program specific application deadlines and requirements. Some graduate programs may also require GRE or GMAT or have a higher GPA requirement.
Graduate admission process is two-fold. International Admissions will perform a preliminary evaluation of coursework to determine if the applicant meets the minimum requirements. From there, the graduate department will make the final admission decision.
To apply, all international graduate applicants must submit the following items:
- File a CSU Long Beach application through Cal State Apply.
- Spring application period: August 1 – October 1*
- Fall application period: October 1 – April 1*
*Some programs have earlier deadlines. Please see Graduate Studies page above for specific requirements. Applications submitted after the departmental deadline may be withdrawn.
- Submit original and certified English copies of transcripts/individual mark sheets from all institutions attended:
- Transcripts must show grades for at least 6 semesters. Please do not send transcripts until those grades are posted to avoid having to submit multiple transcripts.
- If you have already graduated, we will require a degree conferred date or diploma to be sent along with the transcripts.
- Students who submit consolidated transcripts/mark sheets will be required to provide individual mark sheets before an evaluation is completed.
- Applicants submitting electronic transcripts from U.S. institutions (National Clearinghouse, Parchment, etc.) must submit transcripts to ES-IDPTrans@csulb.edu
- English Language Requirements

Please note:
- For departments that require a GMAT or GRE, please send the official scores at the time you apply.
- Students holding a 3-year bachelor's degree (e.g., India) are encouraged to fill out a degree equivalency questionnaire to determine if the 3-year degree is equivalent to a U.S. 4-year degree. International Admissions will determine final equivalency.
Post-Baccalaureate Programs: Second Bachelor’s, Certificate, Credential Students
Students who have obtained a degree level comparable to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree are considered post-baccalaureate students. See below for CSULB admission criteria for post-baccalaureate programs.
All post-baccalaureate applicants must submit the following items:
- File a CSU Long Beach application through Cal State Apply.
- Submit all transcripts from all institutions attended with a degree conferred date or diploma.
- Meet CSULB English Language Requirements
- If you have already taken one of our accepted English tests, please send your official score to CSULB. Please also submit an unofficial copy of your test scores with your supporting documents.
Please note:
- Applying to Credential Programs in the College of Education: Applicants with foreign coursework and a degree from an institution outside of the United States are required to have all foreign transcripts and degree certificates evaluated by a state-approved agency. Click here for a complete list of approved agencies for Foreign Transcript Evaluation. International Admissions recommends using WES (World Education Services).
- For students interested in a Second Bachelor’s degree: to be considered for admission, you must meet the major specific criteria to be eligible.
- We recommend for all students who do not hold a 4-year degree to fill out a degree equivalency questionnaire to determine if your 3-year degree is equivalent to a U.S. 4-year degree. International Admissions will determine final equivalency.
English Language Requirement
English language demonstration is required for all applicants.
CSULB’s English language requirements may be waived for applicants who meet one of the following conditions:
- Obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution.
- Undergraduate Transfer and Second Bachelor applicants with over 60 transferable semester units or 90 transferable quarter units from a domestic U.S. institution.
- First-year student applicants who graduated from a U.S. high school, and completed at least three years at the U.S. high school
- First-year student applicants applying from a regionally accredited institution abroad if all three years were completed at that institution.
- Educated in one of the countries that qualify for an English waiver (listed below).

Our institution code for TOEFL reporting is 4389. TOEFL official score results must be submitted from Educational Testing Service (ETS). We do not accept MyBest Scores. We accept TOEFL At Home scores, if it is available in your region, while TOEFL test centers are closed due to the COVID-19 crisis. We also accept TOEFL IEP Plus scores from applicants who live in mainland China, until ETS resumes their regular iBT tests.
